While dreaming of Europe and longing to travel there, I searched for images to paint. I found an inspiring image of a row of brightly painted houses lining a canal and decided to paint it. While painting, I did some research to find out where this was. I discovered a small island filled with colorful houses ~ Burano. The houses were brightly painted so the fisherman could find their way home from sea. And I found that it was located just off the coast of Venice.

One of the surprising twists in our 5 week tour of Europe, was an invitation to a retreat that was to be held near Venice. We flew there with two couples who were some of our closest friends. One couple was celebrating their anniversary, so we all stayed in Venice for the night before traveling to the site of the retreat.

During the day, we purchased a boat pass, which meant we could travel as much as we wanted by boat. As we boarded the boat for our first excursion I discovered that my friends had planned a surprise for me. They had located the little Island of Burano and we were on our way there!

I can’t tell you how surprised and overwhelmed I was to be on my way to Burano! We spent about 4 hours there with our senses on overload . . .  highlights were church bells, laundry hanging across the canals, fabulous fish dinner and those brightly colored housed with flowers in the windows.

I had walked right into the painting I had created just a few weeks earlier! How satisfying it was to see my painting spring to life and to walk right by the houses I had just painted!

Today, I’d like to share a new painting with you. I call it ‘Riva del Santi’, named after one of the charming Burano streets we ambled down that day. I’m offering this painting for $99.00.
